The Turkish population refers to the number of Turkish people in the world. Precise figures are difficult to calculate because they do not include the much larger numbers of Turks who have been born outside of Turkey or the former Ottoman lands (such as the Turkish Cypriot people), or those who have obtained nationality from the country they now live in.

[edit] Turkish population in Turkey
People identified as ethnic Turks comprise 80% of Turkey's population.[1][2] As of 2005, the population of Turkey stood at 72.6 million with a growth rate of 1.5% per annum.[3][4] The Turkish population is relatively young, with 25.5% falling within the 0–15 age bracket.[5] Population growth is expected to slow, as Turkey has a sub-replacement fertility level.
Turkey's first census of the republican era was taken in 1927 and counted a total population of about 13.6 million people. Less than seventy years later, the country's population had more than quadrupled. Between 1927 and 1945, growth was slow; in certain years during the 1930s, the population actually declined. Significant growth occurred between 1945 and 1980, when the population increased almost 2.5 times. Although the rate of growth has been slowing gradually since 1980, Turkey's average annual population increase is relatively high in comparison to that of European countries.
The Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) released the results of the 2008 census, showing that Turkey's population has surpassed 71 million. According to the results, Turkey's population increased from 70,586,256 in 2007 to 71,517,100 at the end of 2008, a 1.31 percent increase.[6] The population of Turkey is expected to reach 100 million by 2050.[7][8][9]
